Congratulations to PhD student Katharina Richter, from ENT Surgery at the Basil Hetzel Institute TQEH, for being chosen as the "People's Choice Winner" at the University of Adelaide's 3MT final that was held on Tuesday 13 September. Kati was one of 10 finalists to compete, and the title of her talk was "Bug wars - battlefront biofilms". Each finalist was selected from their respective faculty finals. In 3MT competitions, each student has 3 minutes to explain their PhD thesis, using just one slide.
Associate Professor Susanna Proudman, Head of Rheumatology Unit at the Royal Adelaide Hospital, and Professor Peter Hewett, Head of Colorectal Surgery at TQEH each gave seminars outlining current projects in their respective areas of research. Susanna spoke about Autoimmune Connective Tissue Diseases, with a focus on scleroderma and the development of a new screening test that does not require an echocardiogram. Peter then talked about new techniques and technologies in minimally invasive surgery in colorectal cancer, including a discussion on the potential benefits of robotic surgery. The Hospital Research Foundation is thanked for sponsoring the 2016 series of BHI 'Talking Heads' Seminars.
