Professor Guy Maddern was reappointed to the position of Director of Research at TQEH-BHI for a five year term in April 2015. This leadership position has been critical to furthering the aims of research excellence and enhancing the research reputation of TQEH.

The following support structures exist at the BHI:

  • BHI Policy Committee
  • Research Secretariat
  • BHI Facility Manager
  • BHI Communications Officer

Established in 1996, the Clinical Development Research Centre, now the Basil Hetzel Institute Policy Committee, provides strategic advice for the running of the BHI and to optimise the available support programs across The Queen Elizabeth Hospital (TQEH).

The Committee is comprised of senior representatives from:

  • the two Universities with whom the Hospital is affiliated, The University of Adelaide and the University of South Australia
  • academic Heads of Departments at TQEH (Medicine & Surgery)
  • the scientific community

Sub-Committees assist the BHI Policy Committee as required:

  • Research Day Organising Committee, chaired by Dr Prue Cowled, Discipline of Surgery, University of Adelaide, in the planning and running of the annual Research Day event.
  • Scholarship Selection Sub Committee, chaired by Professor Guy Maddern in awarding a range of Scholarships funded by The Hospital Research Foundation.
  • The Institute Management Committee, chaired by Dr Lorraine MacKenzie, Therapeutics Research Centre, University of South Australia. Terms of Reference for The Institute Management Committee are available.

The Research Secretariat undertakes a range of activities to assist the Director of Research at the BHI in promoting, fostering and administering quality research activity across TQEH. Support to staff and students includes:

  • Research grant information; advice on administrative aspects of grant applications; lodgement of applications to granting bodies; advice on outcome of grant applications; reporting activities as required.
  • Scholarship information; advice on administrative aspects of scholarship applications; lodgement of applications to granting bodies; advice on outcome of scholarship applications as appropriate; administration of scholarship finances, including maintenance; reporting activities as required.
  • Data collection (Annual Research Report; ABS)

The BHI Facility Manager is responsible for laboratory management, operations, compliance and general assistance for researchers.

The BHI Communications Officer (0.5 FTE) manages the website, newsletter, social media and liaises with BHI researchers, the Universities and The Hospital Research Foundation.
