Science Alive! 2016 is being held at the Adelaide Showgrounds in Wayville this weekend (from 9-5pm Saturday and Sunday). The BHI booth allows you to test your surgical skills using the laparoscopic surgery simulators (on loan from the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons), and use spirometers to measure your lung volume. Do this while finding out about some of the research being undertaken at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

Associate Professor Wendy Ingman, who leads the Breast Biology and Cancer Unit at the BHI, has received a 2016 Women's Research Excellence Award in "recognition of her outstanding achievements as an established researcher". These awards were established by the University of Adelaide in 2015 to "recognise, celebrate and promote academic women's research excellence".

Last night, 10 PhD students from the Basil Hetzel Institute attended the ASMR Gala Dinner at the Adelaide Pavilion thanks to sponsorship from The Hospital Research Foundation, who are also sponsoring ASMR Medical Research Week (June 2-10). Many of these students, together with additional BHI postgraduate students, are presenting the results of their research at the ASMR SA Scientific Meeting at the Adelaide Convention Centre tomorrow.

Today Tonight screened a story "Unstoppable superbugs - how Adelaide is leading the race to save humanity" on Thursday 2 June. Professor PJ Wormald and one of his patients, Martin Darling, discuss the world-first "phage therapy" trial and the process involved for progressing their research. Cher-Rin Chong leaves for Oxford, England, on May 30, having been awarded the prestigious Oxford Nuffield Medical Fellowship in 2015. Cher-Rin submitted her PhD thesis for research completed under the supervision of Professor John Horowitz and Associate Professor Betty Sallustio at the Basil Hetzel Institute, TQEH. At the University of Oxford Cher-Rin will work with Professor Kieran Clarke and her research group in the Department of Physiology, Anatomy and Genetics.

An article about BHI PhD student Dijana Miljkovic's research (from the ENT Surgery research group, led by Professor PJ Wormald) was published in The Lead yesterday.

The Hospital Research Foundation has announced the successful recipients of the 2016 Grant Funding round. These recipients are based at the Basil Hetzel Institute, The Queen Elizabeth Hospital (TQEH). Congratulations to Dr Isuru Ranasinghe, Professor John Beltrame, Professor Eric Gowans and Associate Professor Wendy Ingman who each receive $100,000.
