Speaker Biography: Dr Maggie Centenera is a Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia Young Investigator in the School of Medicine at the University of Adelaide and the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI). Her PhD, awarded in 2008, investigated androgen receptor structure and function in prostate cancer. For her postdoctoral work at the Dame Roma Mitchell Cancer Research Laboratories, University of Adelaide, she developed a patient-derived prostate cancer explant model where tissue obtained from men undergoing radical prostatectomy is cultured ex vivo. This work has gained international recognition and led to placements as a visiting scholar in laboratories in the USA and Europe to assist them in establishing the technique. She has also undertaken a short-term Fellowship in the Laboratory of Lipid Metabolism and Cancer at the University of Leuven in Belgium. Her current research interests focus on using this model to develop better clinical indicators of response to prostate cancer therapies.
