In the news: Dr Anupam Gupta, TQEH Rehabilitation Consultant

TQEH Rehabilitation Consultant Dr Anupam Datta Gupta was interviewed for Ten Eyewitness News Adelaide on Thursday 1 March about the Australian-first clinical trial investigating the benefits of botox injections for stroke patients. Dr Gupta is also undertaking a PhD at the Basil Hetzel Institute, through The University of Adelaide.
Dr Gupta's research is being supported by The Hospital Research Foundation.

In the news: Professor Tim Price, TQEH oncologist and researcher

An article in The Advertiser, describes a potential new treatment for neuroendocrine cancers using a red chemical dye, called Rose Bengal that was originally used to turn wool and food bright red! Professor Tim Price, an oncologist at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital, heads up the Clinical Trials Group as well as being the research leader of the Colorectal Cancer Research Group at the Basil Hetzel Institute.

Two consecutive TQEH Research Days held in 2017

This year two TQEH Research Days have been held. On both days BHI based postgraduate students from The University of Adelaide and the University of South Australia have presented the results of their research. Prize winners will be announced at a presentation later today. On Thursday, 11 researchers who received grants and fellowships in The Hospital Research Foundation's $2.7 million funding round of 2017 also spoke to an audience of THRF donors and BHI researchers about their research aims. And today, the TQEH Research Day Plenary Lecture was given by The Honourable Mark Butler MP, on the topic of "The Politics of Ageing". Photo: (L-R) The Hon. Spring graduation for PhD students from the BHI

Congratulations to Basil Hetzel Institute Alumni (L-R) Aneta Zysk (Breast Cancer Research Unit), Dijana Miljkovic and Katharina Richter (both ENT Surgery) for graduating with their PhDs from The University of Adelaide last Thursday. All three graduates have remained working in medical/scientific research since submitting their theses. Aneta joined the Intellectual Disability Research Group in the Adelaide Medical School as a research associate in late 2016, Dijana began as the Flow Cytometry Facility coordinator at St Vincent's Institute of Medical Research in Melbourne at the start of 2017, and Katharina is continuing the work initiated by her PhD research. Another BHI based PhD student to graduate in absentia last week was international student Victor Lamin (Translational Vascular Function Research Collaborative). Victor returned to Sierra Leone after submitting his thesis and intended to gain work at his local University. Dean’s Commendation awarded to Dr Katharina Richter

Congratulations to Dr Katharina Richter for being awarded a Dean’s Commendation for Doctoral Thesis Excellence from the University of Adelaide. Katharina completed her PhD thesis entitled “Towards novel antibiofilm strategies” under the supervision Associate Professor Sarah Vreugde and Professor PJ Wormald in the ENT Surgery research group at the Basil Hetzel Institute, TQEH and with Professor Clive Prestidge in the School of Pharmacy & Medical Sciences at the University of South Australia as her external supervisor. Katharina is now working as a postdoctoral researcher in a collaborative project, funded by The Hospital Research Foundation, between ENT Surgery, Prof Clive Prestidge and Dr Nicky Thomas at the Adelaide Biofilm Test Facility. BHI Winning News: THRF grant recipients summarise their project aims

The July edition of the BHI Winning News is now available on the BHI website. For many years, a newsletter has been created each month for researchers at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital. Previously, the editions have only been sent to researchers and their supporters.
The July edition contains summaries of all the recently announced grants and fellowships from The Hospital Research Foundation that will support research at the BHI, TQEH.

Dr Pallave Dasari named as one of the first “Superstars of STEM”

Congratulations to Dr Pallave Dasari (2nd from left in photo), from the Breast Biology and Cancer Unit based at the Basil Hetzel Institute, for being named as one of 30 "Superstars of STEM" in a new initiative of Science and Technology Australia. Pallave is one of 5 South Australian women chosen for this program that aims to "smash existing gender stereotypes" according to CEO of Science and Technology Australia, Kylie Walker and to "make a career in STEM more attractive and achievable option for young Australian women and girls." This photo was taken by Tom Huntley, and accompanied a story published in The Advertiser on 3 July.

THRF announce $2.7 million of funding to BHI and TQEH

The Hospital Research Foundation (THRF) has announced the recipients of their 2017 Grant Funding Round for the Basil Hetzel Institute for Translational Health Research (BHI) and The Queen Elizabeth Hospital (TQEH). THRF have allocated $2.7 million for research that will be undertaken at the BHI, TQEH, their largest grant round allocation to date at these facilities. The 11 grants and fellowships include "The Basil Hetzel Translational Grant", named in honour of Dr Basil Hetzel AC. This new grant is designed to support high community impact, “shovel ready” projects that have a high likelihood of translating into improved therapy, care or cure within 3 years from the start of the grant. Congratulations to two BHI researchers for winning Virology Conference Awards

Two members of Professor Eric Gowan's Virology Group at the BHI received awards at the 12th Annual Scientific Meeting of the Australian Centre for HIV and Hepatitis Virology Research (ACH2). Dr Dan Wijesundara, an Early Career Research Fellow funded by The Hospital Research Foundation, received The Westmead Institute for Medical Research Young Achiever Award (HIV; value $500) while Makutiro Masavuli, a PhD student at the University of Adelaide, received the domestic travel award to attend an Australian conference (value $1000).
