Congratulations to Dr Scott Clark for being awarded the 2017 RANZCP Early Career Psychiatrist Award. Scott's Nature paper (Translational Psychiatry) published in September 2016 resulted in him receiving this award. The University of Adelaide, Medicine Today and Psychiatric News all published articles related to this publication. This Award was established by the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists in 1979 to encourage and promote research in psychiatry in Australia and New Zealand. It is presented annually to the Fellow (within five years of their election to Fellowship of the College) or registrar who has contributed the most significant paper published in the past two years. Vale Dr Basil S. Hetzel 1922 – 2017

The research community at The Queen Elizabeth Hospital (TQEH) is saddened by the death of Dr Basil Hetzel AC. In 2001 the long-standing research activities of TQEH were renamed as the Basil Hetzel Institute. Basil was a proud supporter of all research endeavours and regularly attended the annual TQEH Research Day. He was a great mentor and active supporter of research and of people doing research. Long-term colleague and friend Emeritus Professor Richard Ruffin (photo, left) says Basil was "... a unique person with a research track record that very few will emulate, unless they are on their way to receiving a Nobel Prize". In 1959 Basil was the first Michell Professor of Medicine at TQEH, University of Adelaide, a position that Dick was appointed to three decades later and which Professor John Beltrame (photo, right) holds today.

High Commissioner of the Republic of Botswana visits the Virology Group

The High Commissioner of the Republic of Botswana, His Excellency Mr Lapologang Caesar Lekoa requested meetings with medical researchers during his two day visit to South Australia. Botswana has the third highest prevalence of HIV in the world, so visiting Professor Eric Gowans at the Basil Hetzel Institute, TQEH, provided an excellent opportunity for him to learn about research into developing vaccines for HIV and Hepatitis C. Frontline attack against HIV infection is closer to reality

Professor Eric Gowans and Dr Branka Grubor-Bauk have reported recent findings from their Virology Group in the Nature journal Scientific Reports. Their laboratory studies represent an important step forward in attempts to introduce a first line of defence against HIV at the site of infection. First and third authors on this publication, Khamis Tomusange and Jason Gummow, both recently completed their PhDs with Eric and Branka as their supervisors. To date, these research findings have been reported in today's Advertiser newspaper, ABC online, Gay News Network and many more beyond our shores. These research results are being discussed ahead of World AIDS Day which is held on 1 December every year. World AIDS Day raises awareness across the world and in the community about the issues surrounding HIV and AIDS. It is also a day for people to show their support for people living with HIV and to commemorate people who have died.
