Professor Mike Roberts is an NHMRC Senior Principal Research Fellow, Professor of Therapeutics & Pharmaceutical Science at the University of South Australia and Professor of Clinical Pharmacology & Therapeutics at The University of Queensland.

He established and is Director of the Therapeutics Research Centre (TRC) that has units at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane and, more recently, The Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Adelaide. He has 40 years research experience (25 as a full professor and 16 as an NHMRC Senior Principal Research Fellow) across several disciplines but with a focus on the skin and related technologies, and on research seeking to improve patient outcomes.

Mike is a pharmaceutical scientist, passionate about drugs, toxins and nanosystem delivery (especially topical), whose focus is to deliver better patient outcomes and treatments.

His specific research interests include:

  • rational drug design
  • drug delivery (especially skin and oral)
  • clinical pharmacokinetics
  • toxicology, and
  • the pharmacist’s role in quality use of medicines

Through his research he aims to:

  • provide better treatments for overdoses and poisoning based on physiological parameters
  • develop toxicology and topical predictive models to describe treatment responses with a view to reducing the regulatory burden
  • work with national and international regulatory bodies to develop better criteria to approve topically applied generic products, and
  • to improve the topical and systemic targeted delivery for antimicrobial and cancer chemotherapy

Professor Roberts has supervised 48 PhD completions and examined a further 22 PhD theses. He is currently supervising 10 PhD students (in Adelaide and Brisbane) and actively looking for suitable students to undertake postgraduate study with his group.
